Martin C. Turba

 

Born and raised in Vienna, Martin C. Turba soon became an habitué of the standing room at the city’s Staatsoper. He studied business, specialising in tourism and languages at the universities of Salzburg and Lisbon and wrote a dissertation on Portuguese literature before entering the field of arts management.

 

Receently, he has been planning the Austrian cultural programme for EXPO 2015 in Milan, having successfully curated some 200 events for Austria’s contribution to EXPO 2000 in Hannover.

Martin established his credentials as part of the management team at the Schubertiade festival in Hohenems and Feldkirch, and in 1990 launched his career as an independent arts manager, soon collaborating with artists of the stature of Edith Mathis, Sir Roger Norrington and Wolfgang Holzmair.

He founded the summer festival at Steinbach am Attersee, near Salzburg, in 1992, running it until 2000, and from 1999 to 2003 was in charge of the Operetta Festival in Bad Ischl, where Franz Lehár had a home. He launched Musik Theater Schönbrunn in Vienna in 2005 and remained its director until 2011.

 

Co-producer of a number of live operetta recordings for cpo label, Martin also enjoys a stage career, notably as the Majordomo (Haushofmeister) in Strauss´ Ariadne auf Naxos, which he has performed at the opera houses of Bordeaux, Liège and Toulon. He will again be the Majordomo 2019 at Lausanne Opera. He is also active as a lecturer, presenter and language coach for singers, and teaches arts management at the Kunstuniversität Graz.
